How does this work?

Your car emits short periodic data "bursts" (RFID); The car's "search signal" waits for your keyfob to respond with its own unique code. If the keyfob is out of range (a few meters from the car), the door will not unlock if you grab the handle to open it. Car thieves try to mimic this by using a device to extend and increase the range (up to several tens of meters) of your car and amplify the keyfob response. Once they have received the signal from the keyfob, they are able to send this signal to the car via an amplifier, making it think that the keyfob is nearby and the car opens. However, if the keyfob is in this case, your car (and also malicious people) cannot "hear" the keyfob and will therefore not respond. It's like a safe for your car keys.
